In late July and early August 2024, Svalbard experienced a dramatic temperature spike, with averages soaring about 4°C above normal for this part of the Arctic Circle.

Inspired by this and other concerning events, Whispering Glaciers is a VR mixed-media installation that invites audiences to explore fragments of Svalbard’s visual and binaural soundscapes. The project aims to serve as an audiovisual archive of an environment that is likely to undergo significant changes in the coming years.

In June 2025, the CNAP team traveled to Svalbard to capture videos, photographs, and soundscapes from the archipelago’s unique environment. The Whispering Glaciers VR experience is available for free on Steam.

The project received pre-maturation funding from Cultiva in 2024.
